4 Square House
Type: Residential & Urbanism
Client: JA/ Open Competition
This project seeks to be a critique of the garden city as a model for urban development. It seeks to utilize the urban scale grid in its ordering potential while simultaneously utilizing the other dimension, up , to intensify and densify this landscape with communal spaces without disturbing the solemnity and civility of the garden city.
The active topography, as such, becomes the driving force behind this project, with each house set within this landscape. It becomes an armature for activity spaces, gathering, and sports venues among others, turning the garden city into a multi-layered spectator event.
In this model, the garden in this scheme becomes both private and communal. Homes in this scheme operate as mini-infrastructures for this new activity scape, each with a different set of users in mind (with the intention of diversifying the garden city from the outset). The private home is a little less private in the Perch and Up house, lending themselves to other uses such as circulation and viewing. In the Nest House and the Wedge House, traditional privacy is maintained.
